Landscape Development, Inc has been working on affordable housing and giving back to the community for many years.  Affordable housing has become a large focus in California and especially the Los Angeles area.  We have had the opportunity to engage in many aspects of affordable housing, from training local hire applicants to offering value engineering on construction, ensuring communities are installed safely and on budget.

The following piece below is an employer spotlight we were featured on for Cannon Constructor’s Jordan Downs 700-unit public housing apartment complex in Watts, Los Angeles, California,

Cannon Constructors asked:

Why is LDI interested in the Projects?

From a personal point of view, our Project Manager Alan Garcia was interested in the job in Watts because he was raised in that area.  Alan says: “I witnessed the community and what Jordan Downs looked like before any development began long ago.  To see how much it has changed is a great reward.  I look forward to doing more work in that area.”

From a company point of view, we are highly involved in many opportunities to give back to the community and work along those who benefit most from a safe and beautified place to live.

Landscape Development also wants to be a strong member of the communities we have office locations in and give back.

Below are some examples of us working alongside individuals and corporations on the redevelopment of communities and supporting the people that live in them

Triumph Foundation: mission is to help children, adults, and Veterans with spinal cord injury/disorder to triumph over their disability and to inspire them

TSA projects: TSA projects aim to reduce crime levels by supporting those marginalized to reach their full potential.

Step Up on Vine and Colorado -homeless rehabilitation: Offers permanent supportive housing which leads to stability, inclusion, and recovery.

Home Aid:  is a leading national non-profit provider of housing for today’s homeless.

Habitat for Humanities: Habitat works toward building a vision of strength, stability, and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing.

Gary Sinise Foundation:  Through R.I.S.E., we’re building specially adapted smart homes for our most severely wounded heroes.

Valley Children Hospital: For more than six decades, Valley Children’s has served the 1.3 million kids living in the Central Valley

Bridge to Home: Bridge to Home provides support services – including an emergency winter shelter, case management, housing navigation, and medical clinics – that help individuals and families in the Santa Clarita Valley transition out of homelessness.

National Core: National Community Renaissance, also known as National CORE, is a U.S. non-profit community builder specializing in the affordable, multifamily, mixed-income, senior, workforce, and special needs housing. Based in Rancho Cucamonga, California

We take pride in our work, so bringing our landscaping know-how into the Jordan Downs project we feel uplifts the community.

What are the long-term goals pertaining to this project?

Some of the long-term goals of working on Jordan Downs are Investing in individuals through their local hire program by offering consistent pay, training, introduction to the landscaping trade, and relationship building.   We feel the community is beautified by the landscape and this one, in particular, has been uplifted through that project and working together.

Why were we interested in working on this project?

Initially, Margaret Totty from Cannon Constructors brought us on board.  Her dedication and commitment to the community have inspired us to join in.

Alongside Cannon Constructors, we are looking to see this project through to its next phase and we are committed to the end of its completion.

Alan Garcia says: “We know that this project is bringing in not just housing, but new amenities to the community.   With the amenities, we are hoping to see a rise in local jobs not just in construction but in other areas of mixed-use development.  We look forward to seeing that impact.  We would also like to see the use of more outdoor spaces.  Making it greener in the community is inviting for kids to go outside and play.  And we believe in the long term that this is very important.”

What have we completed to date on the Jordan Downs project?

Landscape Development, Inc started working on the project physically breaking ground in 2018.  We have completed the majority of the landscaping on blocks 8, 7, 5 East, and 5 West.  Bringing in a landscape always creates an inviting feel for the community, and that is very rewarding.
